A lactose free world...

Being lactose intolerant sucks. Ask anyone who has it. It especially sucks when your favorite snack used to be cheese. My mother- God love her- says my body is actually ahead of everyone else's. Why is that, you might ask? Well, apparently dairy was never supposed to be a part of our diet. I dunno, we've made so many different things parts of our diet for hundreds of years, why not have dairy? She watched a documentary (shocker) that explained it like this- we don't make calves drink human milk, so why should humans drink cow milk?

Um, ew. I don't know why, but that completely grossed me out.

But then I started thinking about it. What if our ancestor's never had the though, hmm, I wonder what this creamy stuff would taste like? One thing's for sure- I wouldn't have so much trouble finding stuff I can eat!

Let's look at celiac sufferer's. The entire food industry seems to be moving towards catering to this disease- gluten free bread, gluten free menus, gluten free, gluten free, gluten free! Where's the lactose free?! Sure, there's soy and rice milks, but those are horrendously disgusting (at least to me). Then we have the lovely lactose free cheeses. Gag me with a paper towel. I'm not even joking, the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten was lactose free cream cheese. More and more people are developing lactose intolerance, so why is the food industry so far behind? Lactaid- God love it- is my favorite milk ever. It's milk that's gone through a process to remove the lactose, which is what my body can't digest. My question is this- if you've figured out a way to make lactose free milk, where's the cheese? Surely it isn't that difficult to develop a cheese from the SAME MILK YOU DEVELOPED FOR SALE. The only downside- it costs more for a half gallon of Lactaid than it does for a gallon of milk.

That's another thing- why is it so much more expensive for me to find things I can eat than it is for every day Americans? Okay, I just came up with the answer (it costs more money to make/there aren't as many people consuming my products as others) but still- it's not fair! I'm already suffering enough, having to dissect everything I buy to make sure there is absolutely NO milk product anywhere in it; why do I have to make my bank account suffer? It makes it almost not worth it to buy lactose free products. The downside to that- my body suffers. Sure, I shrug it off and say oh, well, at least I enjoyed it while I ate, but the reality is, I can't keep doing this. Over time, this will harm my body and I have to start thinking about that. I don't want to cut dairy out of my diet all together, even though they say that's healthier for you. Sure, I could do it, probably easily at home, but at restaurants? Where past sauces can have cream bases? Where cakes and pastries use milk in the process? It's almost impossible.

Restaurants and the food production industry needs to catch up- an estimated 30 million to 50 million adults are lactose intolerant in America alone. And that's just the adults! We need products that cater to our needs and DON'T TASTE LIKE CRAP. Please and thank you.

First day back

I hope this blog has a better fate than the other one. I've likened blogs to diaries and I don't have the best track record with diaries. Most of the ones I find have the first few pages written in and then nothing.

Allie and Pet are coming over tonight (at least that's the plan, woop!) and we're going to make grilled chicken, potatoes and veggies for dinner. It'll be my very first home-cooked meal since moving into my apartment 2 months ago. Yeah. That's a silly thing. The getting healthy kick starts today. I've had my last fast food meal for a while, and I plan on being more healthy. I'm not going to cut out everything unhealthy all at once- that's just stupid and it won't work. But my mono is gone, so I can go back to the gym now YAY!

On another note, it's the MSU v. Wisconsin game tonight and I'm so excited! I really hope we beat them, especially after beating Michigan last week. It would just be so sweet to beat two of our biggest rivals one after the other. GO GREEN! GO WHITE! GO MSU!
